Comments for Regarding Early Mobilization

8 hours in a chair

QuestionMy grandfather has a massive stroke effecting his right side with total paralysis. He is in an intensive therapy rehab facility They are making him sit in his wheelchair from 8 or 9 am until after dinner at approximately 530pm, and I know he does not get his diaper changed. During that time they said this was proper procedure. Could you please tell me if is this true? Also they put a lid on his thickened water, and he goes all day without fluids cause he can not take the lid off. He is a total care patient and about the only thing he can do is semi feed himself since he is left handed. Please help with a reply as I feel he is being mistreated.

Answer:Leaving someone in an unchanged/wet/dirtied diaper all day and not meeting hydration needs would be considered neglect. I highly encourage you to speak with the facility management and let them know that your loved one is being neglected and that these issues need to be addressed right away. I imagine they will make sure your requests are addressed. If they do not make changes after you speak to management, I would look for another facility and would report this facility for improper care.
